The internet has evolved with time and had gone from Web 1.0 to 3.0
The Web 1.0 was pretty comparing to what we have now and its primary function was to share information. Interactivity was limited and an expensive supples still were a must.
The Web 2.0 was already more interesting and gave the opportunity of communication. That was the time of the first blogs, WIKI services, podcasts. All these resources could be used in learning foreign languages. In 2.0 the companies now started to provide the platforms, and the content was provided by the users. That was the time when it became possible to share videos/music/etc. It was called the democratization of the Web.
The Web 3.0 is a personalizadle place with intelligent search and behavioral advertisements, where content is generated by machines rather than by humans. People tend to use their smartphones and tables more than computers. Unfortunately, it takes time for the security services to evolve as well and sometimes they leave loopholes which hackers can exploit. Hence there is a big demand in information security specialists.
As to second life in language learning I think it is very helpful, especially the fact that it is really easy to find people from over the world and from the country where they speak the language you are learning. But I do think, that not everybody can find it convenient and I'm pretty sure that it's not going to replace the real world life.
